SWING MANDOLIN WORKSHOP 12PM-2PM
Matt Flinner CELTIC Mandolin Workshop
This workshop is designed to introduce you to the wonderful world of swing music on the mandolin, and to help you improve your existing skills in rhythm and lead playing on swing, new acoustic and jazz tunes (it will also help your bluegrass playing and general musicianship!).
Topics will include: 1) Chords and rhythm: how to play chord progressions on jazz tunes in a smooth way using various chord inversions.
2) The II-V-I progression: how to create smooth lines and even chord melodies over the ubiquitous ii-V-I progression
3) Blues and "Rhythm Changes" Chord Progressions: two of the most common chord progressions will be explored in a few different keys to help improve your knowledge of the fretboard
4) Melody and improvising: how to play melodies with a swing feel, and how to improvise over swing chord progressions. We'll look at what scales and arpeggios to use over the chords and simplify chord progressions down to their essential key centers to give a clearer understanding of how to improvise over swing tunes.
Players of all ability levels will learn from this workshop, but it is recommended that you have at least a rudimentary knowledge of chords and can play rhythm behind some folk & bluegrass tunes. We'll expand on this in easy-to-follow ways as we explore swing tunes. A few swing standards will be discussed and played, and handouts will be given.
