I fear Mr. Curtis may have made one too many trips to his local Baskin Robbins ice cream parlor...
(Either that, or the Shrine Circus was in town.)

All it needs is one of those "clown barf" pics to round out the show

I think the Cafe needs to institute an annual award for the year's ugliest "mandolin family" instrument. We could call it the "DogPlucker Award" and I think nominations for 2005 could now be official closed.

I think he is having fun, in any case, doesn't take himslef all that seriously. On the other hand, (hard to tell from the photos) but he may actually know what he is doing. He also has a baritone guitar (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=47064&item=3781937043&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW), sort of Giannini Craviola style with interesting bracing pattern and a Koa mandola (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=10179&item=3780130263), sort of uke shaped.
Two more eccentric creations:

Whoa!
I love that guy's stuff. He is a rather good builder.

This one's for the people that complain that "builders don't build anything different...why do they all look like F-5's.... there's been no creativity in building since Lloyd Loar...blah, blah, blah"
http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
See where unchecked creativity can wind up?

Maybe it was built by a committee, at a university somewhere...

I like it too! Too much tradition gets stifling. Bring on more gaudy mandos! Where are the chartreuse flying-V's and Warlocks?

Amazing, I love it. Just one question though, can you hear any sound over the colors?

Bear in mind that another preacher also makes unique mandolins - the Phoenix.

I like it. It shows imagination and a willingness to take risks. I'd like to see that instrument up close. I went to James' web site, www.jamescurtis.com. A quick look at work in progress shows that the man obviously knows how to build an instrument. I too live on the Olypmic Penninsula--think I'll look him up. I respect a man who's willing to take a risk.

The baritone guitar looks like somethig by Picasso. I wonder how the backwards guitar plays.

well, I liked the first picture- the blue one (of course). #But when we got to the back, sides, and neck- that's another issue. #I believe this one was made late at night [/I]during mardigrass. #One too many.........
