O.K. everyone, I answered my own question, "is an Eastman mandolin case is suitable for air travel (checking in the cargo compartment instead of carry on)".

The answer is a definite NO, I placed my foot on the closed #case (no mandolin in it) at the body end and even with light pressure, the top started
caving in, so back to Calton or Pegasus.

Which other cases would be suitable for air travel ?

Modern Case Company makes two models. They told me that a lot of people use thier "Ambassdor" case for checked baggage, even though it is not completely "bulletproof." Then they also make a full-blown flight case that is fully "airline resistant."
