Can someone tell me how to save a tabedit file as a PDF? With most programs I can print to Acrobat Reader but when I try this with Tabedit it locks up? I am trying to save as a PDF file so I can transfer the sheet music to my Palm when I am away from my computer. I sometimes use the Palm when sitting outside learning a new tune instead of having the printed paged blowing around.

I don't think you can do that. I think the only way would be to print it out and scan it in as a pdf file. Maybe someone else can think of another solution. It's a cool idea, though. I hadn't thought of it, but I bet you could load Tabledit itself into most of the newer handhelds. I'm gonna try it on my iPaq.

If you have Adobe's PDFWriter, then just "print" to the PDF Writer printer driver. Otherwise, choose a Postscript printer, print to file, and use Ghostscript to convert that to PDF.

Hi!

If you're a happy Mac owner, PDF creation is embedded in the print engine. Choose 'print', then select 'save as pdf'.

If you are a windoze owner, you can download and use the following free (open-source) which does the same thing (creates a 'virtual' printer that outputs to pdf as opposed to printing):
http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/
(once on the page, you need to download PDFCreator-0_8_0_GNUGhostscript.exe)

I would love to see a version of Tabledit on the Palm though! How cool would that be? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Howdy,

Here is a free program that will convert any document to a PDF file. http://www.pdf995.com/download.html. It works by sending your print output to a file. Just chose the pdf995 printer instead of your paper printer when you go to print.

Cheers,
Rich

Another free Windows alternative is PDF4Free (http://www.pdfpdf.com/pdf4free.html).
It adds a tagline to the end of each page of the document, rather than opening a webpage.

Here's what I do to accomplish this task:

1) Add a new printer in Windows (from Start- Settings- Printers). #This should be a Local printer (do not auto detect). #The port to print to should be a FILE (not an LPT or USB port). #

2) The printer to be added should be a Postscript printer. #I use the HP ColorLaserjet 8500 PS. #The PS indicates PostScript. #The driver for this is available either on the system or on the Windows disk. #Give it a name like FAKE PS PRINTER or something like that so you will know what it is. #

3) Print the file from TablEdit to this FAKE PS printer. #When you do that a small window will appear where you need to indicate the directory/filename. #Give it the extension of .PS or .EPS. #Example: c:\tabs\mytune.eps. #

4) Open Windows explorer and go to where ever that file is on your drive. #Right click it and open with Acrobat Distiller. #This is the program that will convert the PostScript file to PDF. #As mentioned, there are also other programs and web sites that can do this. #You can feed the PS file to them and get a PDF in return. #

I do this all the time and it works great. #Hope this helps. #

Any of these free PDF creators work with Win98? (I know, I should upgrade, but I'm waiting till I can afford a Mac.)

Hi!

The one I mentionned above (http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/) supports Win95/98.

...and have you seen the Mac Mini (http://www.apple.com/macmini/)? Only $499 http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif I want to buy like 5 and stack them next to my PC at work http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Well, I am getting closer. I exported it as an HTML file and then was able to create a pdf file. However, it does not seem to be the right version for my Palm, something to do with tags. I am new with the Palm and probably do not have it synchronized right.

To create pdf files, I also use free PDF995 (http://www.pdf995.com/download.html) (download PrinterDriver & FreeConverter, for Windows 95,98,XP,etc). When installed, PDF995 becomes a choice in Printer options, selected with File > Print in TablEdit, or any other program. AdobeReader opens automatically with the newly created pdf file (as does a one-line sponsor page in a Browser window, tho easily removed with BackButton or CloseWindow).

psann ... I'm not familiar with Palm ... but may I suggest ... to create a pdf ... instead of exporting TablEdit tab to HTML , try using TablEdit Print ... (BTW, just a thought ... pdf is necessary to show notation, but as you seem interested in only tab, the html export already creates a simple text tab file ... did you try opening the HTML file (pre-pdf) on the Palm, to see how it views?)

To Create A PDF File With TablEdit File > Print ...

* First, adjust your music/tab to make it look like you want ... File > PrintPreview > PrintSetup > Options > ScreenMode: check Tablature ... VerticalSpacings: experiment with values of BetweenSystems & TablatureLines > Apply ... make other Options adjustments ... for example ... to make the width smaller to view easier in palm, with less scrolling, try Options > PageLayout > adjust Margins > Apply > OK ...

* Create pdf ... You didn't say how you were able to create your pdf, but if you have a virtual PDF Printer ... Print > SelectPrinter > Print will create/save the pdf document, ready to transfer to your Palm ...

Hope this works for you ...

... and this also got me thinkin' ... I'm going to experiment using TablEdit pdfs to help create clearer jpg files (instead of metafile exports) ...

Keepin' tuned ...
