In a recent thread, someone suggesting using synthetic core strings for situations where lower string tension is required (e.g., the low course on a 10-string mandolin, or shorter-scaled instruments).

First of all, what it this "synthetic core" of which we speak?

Also, for those of you who have experiemented with such strings, what are your preferences or recommendations?

thx,
jim

modern classical guitar DAE strings, [and the lower wound ones on my baritone sets made for uke], are multifiliment nylon wound with silvered copper or aluminum.
Aramid, dupont kevlar are other synthetic materials that would serve the tensile strength requirement, and as such go into tyres and those bulletprotector vests that the reserve troops lack.

there is a nylgut from italy that is formulated to be like the baroque period natural, leather, stuff.

Elderly.com (home/frontpage} is one retail source of various guages and sets.

Godin has one instrument, guitar scale length; an 11 string (no octave on the lowest pair) fretless with all synthetic/nylon strings, bridge saddle piezo amplification.
Working from available classical guitar E strings , and going upwards in pitch, with fairly light , .008 at the high end is a thought.

I recall Orchestral harps use a variety of string compositions at various octaves, for their tone /tension characteristics.

I've seen silk & steel, and bronze & silk strings. #Are they truly made with silk?

The Idea as I understand it, a bit is wrapped around the core wire, and the metal winding is wrapped over that, as to being real worm spit, I'm not sure.
Q&A at GHS may be more definitive.
