I love purpleheart, and am comming by some book matched peices (2) 6 X 26 x 3/8 and am wondering if it would work for a flat to mando's top or if it should be used as a veneer for and electric mando I am wanting to build? I have seen, but not heard purpleheart topped guitars, so i know it would look good, but I am concerned of it's performance.

I wouldn't use it for a top but I would for back and sides.

ixnay on the optay....IMHO staying with the time tested, traditional woods is a better alternative. Stay with the quarter sawn Spuces and Cedars that have the strength to weight ratio needed for an accoustic instrument top. Save the purple heart for the sides and back.

Likewise, spruces, ceaders redwoods are tone woods for top construction
Hardwoods such as you mention are best suited for backs and sides
