Sorry if this is old news, but I finally got my copy of the 'Bluegrass Journey' DVD last week. Really enjoying it, but I can't help but wonder what some of you traditional bluegrass types think of it.

We've often had threads about Nickel Creek on here, but I must say I was a bit surprised at some of the other performances at Grey Fox. These include unaccompanied numbers by both Tony Rice and Jerry Douglas, which I loved but thought they seemed more 'folky' than I would have expected. The same could be said for most of Tim O'Brien's stuff. On the other hand, the 2 numbers featuring Peter Rowan were more 'bluegrassy' than I expected from him, having seen him solo in Scotland about 4 years ago.
I'm not that bothered about labelling music myself, but for something calling itself 'Bluegrass', it was much more varied than I thought it would be.
The stuff from the Bluegrass Convention, mostly in the second half of the DVD, was much more what I'd have expected.

And as for the pagan wedding???

There's obviously more to the bluegrass world than I'd realised.

I agree with what you are saying Dagger, I also just got a copy, but if you consider that the "hard core" is well represented (Bob Paisley, Del McCoury, Lonesome River Band), then they also had to show "The Journey"... I didn't feel that the opening jam with Thile and Jerry was very appropriate though... my wife said after a few minutes: "I don't like that..." and I had to agree, while also telling her that these two guys are thought by many to be the best on the planet on their respective instruments. It's like a joke that you have to explain to someone....

I looked at it several times. The Del Mccoury Band caught my eye but after seeing some of the other artists featured on it i decided not to go for it. All Star Bluegrass Celebration is a winner though.

I agree - a lot of this video is not "traditional". But after watching it well over 50 times (it's my four year old son's absolutely favorite video) I still thoroughly enjoy it. I could however have done without the extensive pagan wedding coverage. I would say that my favorite part is the opening track "We Hide and Seek". The interplay between Thile and Douglas is just mesmorizing.

Funny thing is the girl who got married said she met her husband there at the festival 10 years earlier. Well, the next year they were divorced. The girl is a purple freak. Everything she has is purple. Even hand painted her van purple http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
