I've always used J-74's or J-75's before with pretty good results. I'm really not sure what my new Eastman came strung up with but I recently put a set of Gibson Bill Monroe stings on it and it seems that I have lost some sustain, especially on the A and E strings. My question is, will a lighter gauge string typically produce better sustain? Also, does anybody know what strings an Eastman comes with (Gordon, Steve, anyone???)

I think it depends on the individual instrument. Some respond better to heavy strings than others.

Thanks 250sc, I think you're right. I switched from the Bill Monroe's to a set of GHS light gauge strings and the sustain improved immediately. The G string was the biggest gauge difference (41 for the Monroes down to 36 on the GHS). It did lose some "oomph" if you know what I mean but I raised the action a tiny bit and it's still plenty loud and more open sounding. I'd still like to know what strings come on a new Eastman (Gordon).
