Anyone here tried "Dust in the Wind" as a trio or more? If so, what instruments did you use? Just curious.

Ok, how about as a duet?

Assuming someone sings the vocal line (they aren't suited for a mandolin) The best combos of instruments is:

Guitar, Mandolin, Mandola

However, you could get away with just Guitar and Mandolin. The mandolin could play both the violin and viola parts. Just would not get that nice dynamic interaction like the recording.

I wonder if anyone has tried mandolin and viola, or violin and mandola.

Or mando and banjo? I think I vaguely remember hearing a bluegrass spoof version on Prairie Home Companion (played by the Smileys, or whatever the name of that bg gag group was).

It was easy, I found a midi file of "Dust in the Wind" and imported into Tabledit. This is just for one mandolin and guitar. The best voicing would be mandolin and viola.

The mandolin would play the high part and the viola the counterpoint.
