As I study the picture of Bill's band which I linked to from the front page, it appears his strap is attached inside the scroll of the peghead. Bizzare.

Around both scrolls actually...before the mando suffered the loss the of the lower scroll.
I have tried this in an attempt to get the strap to support the neck weight. #I decided that it just looked too wierd and went back to the old fashioned, attached on the body scroll method. #I have seen this method used for A-style's though.

There sre a few pictures of Monroe's newly-found F-5 showing his strap attached around the peghead. It appears to be a braided string strap. His next strap was a thin leather one, attached to the scroll.
Here is another very early picture of the F-5 with the string tied around the peghead.

And here is a picture of Bill with his F-7, with the strap also attached to the peghead.

Evan, I have always had this urge for a strap like Bill used
for years, you know, the leather one that you see on the
Bluegrass Ramble album cover. I always liked that strap, the
way it looks on the mandolin, etc. I even called James and
asked him where it ended up ; He told me he did remember the
strap I'm talking about, but had not a clue where it ended
up. He said he assumed it got lost in the shuffle, over the
years. Did anybody ever hear him say where he got that
particular strap, the dark leather one he used for years ?
Thanks, Jim Pullen, certified Monroe nut http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

How are F5's generally balanced? Is it possible to use a saxaphone-style strap attached only to the body scroll (a la Tiny Moore), or would it be too top or bottom heavy?

There's a mando player here in Portland (OR) who plays that way - mando strap around players' neck and body scroll. The forearm (right arm) sort of holds the back end in place - but when he gets going fast the mando dances around quite a bit. Kinda fun to watch...

Instead perhaps,Ala David Grisman ? his setup is on the F5 acoustics, looping around the un modified scroll, it seems.
The Tiny Moore music LP,I have, shows the 5 string electric. which being a solid body balances differently.
[the "scroll" of the bigsby/roberts curls the other way, no straphanger.]
