Did anyone see the "Mandolin" segment on CBS' "Sunday Morning" show this morning? I thought it was pretty cool. It had interviews with Gilchrist, Grisman, Thile and Baldassari and tracked the ups and downs of the instrument in American culture. There was some nice footage of Monroe playing and a cool clip of Gilchirst and Grisman jamming. You can guess what brand they were both playing!

If you saw it, what did you think? Anything jump out at you?

I caught it and thought it was very interesting. Mainly because I've never had the chance to actually see Grisman play. I liked the historical look at the instrument and I thought it intersting that when Gilchrist is talking about building a mando, Monroe's "Bluegrass Breakdown" was playing in the background. The clip of Monroe playing was cool and his Loar was LOUD in that segment.

Didn't know they were doing a mando piece but an glad I caught it. Made me get up and practice!

I thought it was an excellent piece and typical of the CBS Sunday Morning program. I'd watch it over if I could. Did you notice Grisman's Gibson was still taped over, but not the Gilchrist? I think there is a major riff between the Dawg and Gibson that just isn't being publicized out of good taste. Otherwise, wouldn't we have seen a Gibson "DAWG-Grisman" Mando by now? Just my 2 cents.

A friend called this morning and told me to turn on CBS. I don't know how much I missed, but I thought it was pretty well done.
It seemed to be put together by someone who knows what's going on in the mandoworld.
Can you imagine being a mandolin loving segment producer on that show, and pitching the idea... "Hey, what about a story about the history of Mandolin music? We could talk to Grisman, Gilchrist... give Thile a call and see what he's up to. Sounds good? And you'll PAY ME to do it? I love my job."

Got up early just to see that. I never knew that Gilchrist was a surfboard maker. That's pretty cool. I thought it was an awesome piece.

Thought it was an excellent segment that presented the Mandolin from both an interesting historical perspective, as well as demonstrating why we are all so hooked on the sound and feel of the instrument. I thought of the many fantastic players who were not interviewed (how could they all be). The downside of the segment...another reason to increase the Mando's popularity and drive up the prices even more.

Uhhh.....Isn't that the up side?
Oh, sorry, thought I was still in the builders forum http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Didn't see it, heard about it on the phone. I haven't watched TV for over 20 years. Did anybody tape it?

Did I see the Gibson logo on Dawg's tee?

I saw the segment and loved it. My wife and I saw the Nashville Mandolin Ensemble a couple of months ago here in Madison and when they showed them my wife said "hey, I know those guys." It was pretty cool. I could have listened to Dawg and Gilchrist play all day. Yup, after seeing that I got out my mandolin and played for way too long that morning. It sure was cool to see Bill Monroe playing in front of that old house. It brought back memories of playing gospel tunes with my stepfather back on the farm.

Hey Alan,

Gilchrist is splitting time between Australia and the US. He was near his major wood supplier finishing mandolins, doing repairs, and going through the wood pile I'd guess.

I thought the segment on CBS was great. I always drag myself out of bed Sunday morning to watch the show. Does anybody know where the footage of Bill came from? It sounded like he was playing Scrooge, real spooky-like.

The old footage of the Nashville Mandolin Ensemble also had Charlie Derrington in it. He played with them from its inception till a few years ago. Great group with some great players.

I haven't seen it yet myself, but my eagle-eyed and quick-witted Mom taped it for me. She turned the satellite dish to the CBS station on the west coast so she could catch it again from the beginning.
Sunburst--if you know a good way to convert VHS to digital file, I'd be glad to share, as long as that's not too highly illegal, against board policy, or otherwise prohibited.

I think the bit with Bill Monroe is from a DVD I have titled Bill Monroe Father of Blue Grass Music. That CBs bit was really nice too short Rgds Jim

The other young player with Grisman on that show was Jake Henry from Newberg Oregon and he was playing his new Rigel G-5. That portion was filmed at a show last September in Carmel California. Kenc

Good morning from Australia. Living over here I obviously do not have access to the variety of programs that you are receiving in the USA. Would any of you have this segment on DVD and would you be prepared to send me a copy? As I reward I could offer an 'extra special' mandolin pick not available in any of your shops. Ralf, Sydney:p

You can order tapes of the show at the "CBS Store" for $29.95 US. As far as format and what is involved in getting "down under," you can inquire at: cbsstore@ordering.com. the Feb 22 show is not available yet, but should be soon.

Just an FYI-

I checked with the CBS store and the show from last Sunday will be available, but the mandolin segment won't be on it.

.... and any media with the segment will only be sent to the continental USA and Canada. How about that?!

Wait, now I'm confused -- is the tape they are offering in the US and Canada going to have the mandolin segment?

NO, I was told explicitly that the mandolin segment would not be available. #It's gone to the air unless you know someone that taped it.
