This is a spin off of a previous discussion entitled "Pulling ridiculous faces whilst playing!".......I believe someone has the right to express ones feelings while playing during a good drive or groove but I think the "Chicken Neck" movement is alittle ridiculous looking. A slight nod is more appropriate. While observing one from the side view doing the chicken neck to a good drive or beat looks un-natural and weird but funny !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What do others think?

I've noticed that a lot of really good pickers do the chicken neck. Mike Marshall and Chris Thile both, there are others I can't recall. So I'm thinking maybe it's something I should work on myself.

Appropriate! Yes!!! Above all, we must be appropriate.

I've always called it the Pigeon Bob.

It's only a small step to head banging, so I'd avoid it.

Don`t let Jesse Brock hear you talk about this, it seems to work for him...He also walks around while doing it....Call it "The Chicken Walk"

Isn't it called the Duck Walk when Chuck Berry does it?

Wouldn't "Chicken neck" make a good title for a Blue Grass song?

Chicken Neck - now there's a new name I could use to describe the loose, flabby skin which age and indolence has bequeathed to me. I try to get my camera shots to keep the head and neck out of sight, but the neck appears of its own volition! Ah well!!

I remember Charlie Derrington do the chicken neck; also, David Grisman and Sam Bush do some related movements. Could it be the chicken neck is related to relatively modern music? In the old days, when you could tell from the music that most of the musicians were raised on a farm (next to chickens!), there was no chicken neck movement, as far as I know. Anyhow, timing comes from the right hand, nowhere else.

Maybe it starts in the neck, then goes down your arm.

I am all for it! It is a great form of expression, and in some instances, turns a musician into a performer! Especially if they throw their musical expertise, vocal tones and body language into the show. Joe Cocker is in town this weekend! Always liked Roger Miller's game. I think if it is a natural form of musical expression, go for it!!
