Hey, if we can create clamp-on finger rests/pickguards, ToneGards, and arm rests why not create a clamp-on lap point for all those mandos that don't have them?

Just a random thought.

Well, I just recieved my patent on my million dollar idea! How odd that this converstaion comes up on the mandolincafe. I am going to have to have a little talk with my friend Jimmy down at the patent office.....

Anyways, I always liked the idea of an attatchable scroll for A style mandolins. - It screws on like a violin chin guard and acts as a very nice strap hanger. - This way you don't have to install the rather ugly, dreaded, strap button. - Preserve the resale of your mandolin!

Of course, my agents will be watching for copyright infringement.

What do you all think?

Well actually I was half-way serious.

There are guitar accessories that are designed to attach to the sides of the guitar to allow you to change the angle at which it rests on your knee. I think there are 2 or 3 different models or designs, and one of them employs a suction cup.

So a "clamp on" lap point doesn't seem to be out of the realm of reasonable possibilities.

Plus, Ted Eschliman thought a single lap point was a good enough idea that he added one to (or advocated for one on) the design of the Rigel Q.

the "point" wouldn't even need to be wood. It could be soft rubber.

oh well, just thinking with my fingers.

A call to the fellow who makes tonegards (for a price) ought to be able to add a custom lower lap point loop . You need a case with enough space , as i am understanding, they should stay on the instrument.
fit a nice screw-eye in the top rim?

I think a clothesline hook would more closely approximate a scroll! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

If you find any photos of the electric Roberts 5 strings that Tiny Moore owned , thats how he used the Sax hook for his playing. its at a near balance point, though , not over the 12th fret... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

When I was 7, all I wanted my Harmony Monterey to be for halloween was a Lloyd Loar. Trouble is, they didn't have the Vinyl Loar costume back then.

Anybody know where I can pick one up?

Here's a different take, seriously:

Take an 8" x 1.5" strip of suede, put a hole in one end to secure it to the tail pin, then simply drape/wrap it along the bottom side of your instrument. It would create good friction against a leg/pant leg so the instrument would stay more or less anchored in place. It would be easily removable and replaceable with no fear of damaging the finish from scratching or dinging. The idea is like having a "inverted" strap of sorts.

I'm not into the idea of patenting something like this, but if it helps folks, donations to Goshen Old-Time Dancing are always welcome (see link below).

LAp Point? I need a belly hook. If I could rest my mando on my lap I couldn't reach it to play it.

I know I'll get a belly button ring in my belly and a cup hook on my mando then I can just hook up.

I could even take the strap off and spin the mando in a circle just like Z.Z.Top

The suede strip is a neet idea.
