...Great googly moogly!! What a mild to moderate pain?!! It was partly due to the strings being looped around the pegs. Which is OK and correct, but makes it kinda' hard for us rookies to change strings for the first time. I do the wrap it under the cut string then over it thing. That way the strings stay in tune but are much easier to remove. That is all.

I know, it's like you need three hands. So I recruit a third hand, a guitar capo.
When I get the loop set And taught, I clamp the string to the fretboard. Then I can take care of getting the string attached to its tuner. Keep the capo on until there is obvious tension the remove and bring the string to pitch. Don't worry about getting the tuning right until all the strings are set.
George,
What a magnificently obvious and overlooked idea. Thanks for the tip!

When I change strings I use a small piece of masking tape and put it over the strings at the tailpiece so the loop can`t become disengaged, that frees up both hands to get the strings placed correctly at the tuner posts....Don`t have to be a rocket scientist to figure this out, although I am....

You're not supposed to use a capo on a mandolin!
