I am new to the mandolin. Have a Dean Tennessee A with a light set of Martin Strings (.01-.034"). It sounds ok except for the Gs. Open they sound ok but when fretted for a C for example it just sounds dull.
Would a set of larger (BG) strings help?
I would have to make the string slots in the nut larger.

Thanks,

I tried a set of Martins once and that was it.

Try a set of lights from D'Addario I think they are J 62 strings before you start messing with the string slots. If that doesn't do it then you might still be able to fit the next set up in weight which are J74 strings .

What I did was go to Juststrings and bought several different types of strings...in fact I am STILL experimenting, but I think the D'Addarios have been the most consistant...
