I purchased my 02 F9 about 3 months ago. It sounded pretty good but not great, something was missing. I expected it to have alot of pop and whop. Don't get me wrong there was a some. I had problems with the strings binding to a degree I have never experienced. In fact I was convinced it had to be the machines. They were replaced with Grovers and the binding was still there. I took the F9 to Skip Kelly. He replaced the corian nut with bone, dressed the frets, refit the bridge and put on a fresh set of FT 74's. BAM !!! -- He called me and said we have "set this mandolin on fire!" Seriously folks it don't sound like the same axe. I listened as Skip played; I was amazed at the
change in tone and volume. The pop, whop and chop are there too in Gibson style. Skip is great guy and he builds one very fine mandolin too. I have not seen a post on the cafe where we pickers bragged about our set up guys. Hence some well deserved recognition for Skip. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif Lp

Where is Skip located (I live in NC too) and what does he typically charge for set up work?
