I'm off to Dublin tomorrow for a long weekend. Any good mandolin shops or sessions you can recommend?

I can only recommend Guinness, Guinness, and more Guinness! It makes the fingers nimble!

As in dipping the fingers in it? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Of course! It actually makes the mind more nimble but it is kind of tough to dip your head in a pint.

O'donoghues just off the green. one of the oldest pubs that stil has the traditional feel. great live music. you have to get there early. very small place that packs them in.
If you really want the traditional pub feel, go to Sandymount. it's a suburb off the train line. Ryan's is OK. the better place is just around the corner (had too many pints there to remember the name). it's small. usually have a fire in the fireplace. no music blaring. just old local dudes and the best pints! afterwards you can walk along the sea to sober up, too.
supposed to be good music at the Mad Cow, but it's a drive out of town. i think they do trad, country and folk. heard good stuff about it, but never made it out there.
for great live music outside of Dublin, check out Doolin and especially Ballyvaughn on the west coast. never disappointing. worth the car rental and great scenery.
lots of guinness and bushmills recommended!!
craig
oh, forgot to mention . . .
never found any good mandolins while i was there. there is a builder named Chris Larkin in the Dingle area. if you're over there, i'd drop in and see what he has. he has a web-site link in the builders section.
cheers

thesession.org lists a few active sessions in Dublin.
Where will you be staying?

Thanks for the replies folks, I'm back now and I had a very great time.
Guinness a-plenty, and irish music!
Only very few, and fairly un-inspiring mandolins in shops, but some really nice bouzoukis. Fiddles, bodhrans, guitars, banjos and flutes. The sessions I attended had a lovely feel, in the sense that everyone seems to know the tunes, and hum/sing along.
Ireland is steeped in music, it's wonderful, and very inspiring. You should go!
