I moved to the area about a month ago from Ohio where I played with a gospel group in church. I have been playing mando for two years and have no musical experience prior to that. I consider myself a beginner and am looking for a group to play with. Anyone out there playing bluegrass guitar, fiddle, etc. that needs a mandolin player?

You might get in touch with the folks at Fretted Instruments in Homewood (B'ham). They might be able to help you find someone. Move down to the Mobile area and you'll have plenty of folks to pick with.

In the Air Force and will be here two more years. Can't quite get to Mobile right now. By the way, do any of you all know Bill Berry? I was given his name as a bluegrass point of contact in Montgomery.

Sorry I don't have any contact info for you for Birmingham, even though I grew up just 50 miles east of there (Anniston). But I did want to warn you of the name change you'll soon acquire. Northwest of Birmingham is a town called Jasper. Among the "true Southerners" this name is pronounced JAIS-per. Thought I'd give you a head's up. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I already understand the pronunciation issue...I grew up in Tennessee and actually got my nickname because of Jais-per Alabama. Long story, short...met this fellow in a bar in Indianapolis, Indiana who said he was from way down South. I asked where and he replied Jasper. I said Jasper, Alabama and he replied no, Jasper, Indiana. We laughed horribly at him and heckled him and his partners out of the place. There was more to it than that, but everyone started calling me Jasper after that, as I was the token Southerner in the group.

Go over to COMANDO and nose around for Willie McCraney. Hes in Millbrook, knows all the pickers and picks a fine mandolin his own self.
