Hey there, today I picked up my first mandolin.

I got a used mid-missouri M-4 for $500 canadian with the case.
I think I got a pretty good deal, and it looks and feels almost 100% brand new. The case is pretty nice too. I really dig the sound, ive been playing some zeppelin songs like battle of evermore and going to california with the tabs here. Can anyone else recommend me similar songs to learn?

Try out http://www.mandozine.com/

If you download the free version of the TablEdit program, you can view huge numbers of tunes in both standard notation and tablature. A great resource.

You've made a great choice with the M-4, I have had mine for 4 years and love it. It seems to sound better all the time. Keep it hydrated, mine developed a 5 inch long crack because I didn't pay attention to dry conditions indoors in a canadian winter. I just use a Violin Trophy humidifier.

I am getting a Weber tailpiece this Christmas for my instrument. It should help with tone a bit, but I'm already pleased with that.

Hope you get to know your Mid Missouri well.

Yea I should really get a humidifier being in Canada and winter's approaching. Need one for my acoustic guitar too.

But like I said before, I havent listened to much of a variety of mandolin music yet. So what are some other players that have good songs that sound similar to JPJ's?

Or can someone list some artist's that play nice fast-paced classical mandolin.

The "Dampit" humidifier works really well. If you keep your mando in a case, you can do a humidifier on the cheap by filling an old plastic aspirin bottle (that's what I use, but any plastic bottle will work) with cotton and putting some cuts along the sides of the bottle to let the moisture seep out slowly. It's easy to re-charge, just drop it in a glass of water.

bango,

there is a forum further down teh main message board that deals with the ROCK genre (maybe you've already posted there), but there may be some discussion that interests you there as well. Congrats on the new mando!

Bango,

Congratulations! Check out Jimmy Ryan. He's a Boston-based musician and brings a fresh perspective to the mando - influenced by the Clash and Ramones as well as Bill Monroe. Also, see Niles Hokkanen who proves that everything can be played on mandolin. Good luck.
