I've always done it in A but there's no reason you couldn't do it in another key.

Our band has always played it in G. I rarely get to play mandolin on it (usually banjo, and I don't mind admitting it), but when we have a 5 piece band everyone gets to play something. The guitar and bass double the riff at the pause, and our mandolin player switches to fiddle for a final run on twin fiddles. (Now I have to go try it in A - never thought about it before...)

This song has always fascinated me.

I understand the "Down" part, but where is "Yonder" ??

Down Yonder is the lower Mississippi river heading to New Orleans. Almost always played in G.

This also is a song that can be sung. When but a wee little lad, I learned the words from my mother. Often it surprises "jammers" when I break in to a vocal rendition. (I'm sure that goes for other songs as well).

I play it in G too. I learned it from the Doc Watson version and have played it close to that ever since.

"How does it go, Vasser?"

quote from Doc Watson, Will the Circle Be Unbroken.
