My wife bought me a new electric fender for my birthday this week. I have visited the music store several times in the last few months to play their mandolins and fell in love with the Fender. I can't recall the model at the moment, but it is acoustic/electric. The sound is wonderful and string height seems perfect. I started this July with the mandolin after an impulse buy landed me a high quality 'Snowking' for $40 from ebay. Once I put some new strings on and learned a couple of scales, I instantly formed a relationship with the mandolin. But, with this beast, after playing for about 15 minutes, I have no feeling left in my fingertips. This never seemed to dull my fascination with the ingenious fret layout and the unique sound. When I brought home the new Fender and got her tuned up, I was overwhelmed at how easily I could play this piece of work over my bargain buddy. Then when I plugged her into the amp, I was awe struck. Just beautiful.
I have always heard that a better mandolin will not make you a better mandolin player, but I have to say, my accuracy and speed was much improved. Should I still play my cheapo mando? I'm thinking that as long as I still play it every so often, I will always appreciate my new fender. And, btw, the fender is all stock. Stock bridge, strings and all. Should I be considering any upgrades to enhance my playing?
Thanks

Cheapos make good travel/camp/office/beater mandos, so you don't need to worry about damaging your baby and paying through the nose for repairs.

And when it's not on the road, I'd play it a little from time to time, as you said it'd let you really appreciate how great the Fender sounds.
