Hello everyone,
It's possible this topic has been tackled and I missed it, but after one is able to play the mandolin is it easy to transfer that knowledge to the violin/fiddle. Is chording the same?

The noting is the same. #Up to a point, the mandolin helps the fiddling, after a certain point it gets in the way. #You need to think different on the fiddle than the mandolin.
I had to take a lot of years away from the mando to get better on the fiddle. #Took that long to learn to think like a fiddler.

I've been working on fiddling recently as well, and yes it takes some paradigm shifting (did I just say paradigm?)
Knowing the mando notes and tunes really does help don't let anyone tell other wise.
Now the bow is a huge stumbling block.

But all in all I've noticed that my wife isn't telling me to stop as soon as she used to be...

This is exactly what i finally had to learn in order to stop beating my head on the proverbial wall. They are simply completely different instruments and require very different thinking and techniques. I started making headway again when i stopped coming to the fiddle as a mando picker.
I too am thinking about how much time fiddling can take and counting the cost to my mando playing. Tough decision.
