Are there any builders out there building Lyon and Healy A-style replicas (the one with the violin scroll)?

Like these (http://www.mandolincafe.com/archives/builders/lyonhealy.html), or many discussed here (http://www.mandolincafe.net/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=13;t=19320)?

Marilynn Mair's L&H repro is made by Canadian luthier Doug Woodley. She said in her Mandozine interview that overall, she thinks it is a better instrument than her original L&H.

Doug Woodley's do not, I believe, have the violin like scroll on the headstock. There is a Lyon and Healy B style that is similar. The A style has the scroll.

My guess is that for an upcharge, though, Mr. Woodley would do a scroll, and for a downcharge, the other L&H reproducers would do a traditional headstock. Obviously Ms. Mair did not want one, so her signature model did not wind up with one.

I wonder how costs for copies compare to originals in nice condition. Old ones may still cost less, I suspect. And they seem to hold up very well. Of course, a new one would be completely reliable (or so one would hope).

I may be wrong here but I seem to remember reading that Marilyn Mairs woodley is just a regular A style not a L&H repoduction.

Nope, Mair's is definitely after the L&H style A, which meant something a bit different than what Gibson called a style A...and something way different than what Martin called a style A. I think it's pretty common in the US for mandolinists to hear "style A" and automatically attach it to the connotation evoked by Gibson.

Ortiginal L&H instruments seem decidedly cheaper than modern reproductions, an odd state of affairs that is duplicated in the Gibson F4 model. F4s are finally rising in price to rival the repros, but there isn't enough demand for the L&H instruments to drive them into the hands of collectors - yet. These wonderful old instruments can be had for less than 4K for the top of the line; the repros are considerably more, so I am told.

The Sullivan seems to have the correct tail piece on it...Anyone interested in an original and lives or wants to come to the Maryland area, I have a 1921 L&H for sale...I won`t buy or sell anything without first playing it or having the buyer play it...Willie
