OK, I'm at work this morning after driving back from the Nickel Creek show last night in Birmingham. I'm trying to stay awake.
I really enjoyed the show for the most part. It wasn't quite as good as the last 2 Nickel Creek shows I went to, but it was still great.
Just a few thoughts about the show:
They played a few new songs. I liked the instrumentals more than the others. Some of them sounded like ideas that needed to be expanded on. Maybe they will do some editing before recording.
Chris seemed like he was just getting warmed up towards the end of the show. He weas fairly tame for the first half, but at the end he was really letting it rip. His choice of notes is awesome! Its fun to watch someone that knows music that well. He played a couple songs off his new solo cd. They were ok, but didn't particularly blow me away.
Sean Watkins! Several times during the show I caught myself thinking how awesome this guy is! He seems very reserved but his picking is great. He really played some great solos, and really stretched out on some. Why doe he not get much credit? I guess their are more great guitar players than their are great mandolin players.
Howie Day was ok. He kept my attention. He had a great voice, cool looping on his guitar and voice. It really sounded like a full band at times. I'm not sure how much I like his actual songs. If he had been up there playing the same songs without the looping stuff, I think it would have gotten old.
Also, as others have said, it would have been nice to hear a longer set from Nickel Creek. My favorite part was when they came out for an un-plugged encore all around one microphone. Chris really shined. His mandolin sounds incredible! They played a song they learned that day about Birmingham. Pretty cool!
What is that mandolin he plays? I couldn't read the headsotck (even from the 3rd row).
