Ok, I am fired up. #I got 3rd row center stage tickets to the Nickel Creek concert tonight. Upon further investigation I found that it is a co-bill show. Nickel Creek plays 60-75min, and Howie Day plays for 60-75min. #I am wondering if anyone has been to one of the show on this tour? What can I expect? Is Nickel Creek playing some new songs? Who is Howie Day? Thanks!!

I would have liked to see them but two small kids make getting out a little difficult. A good friend of mine saw them in Northampton MA and said Howie Day was pretty incredible. Evidently he had some type of recorder and would record what he was doing on the fly, loop it and play along with it so that by the end of a song it sounded like he had a whole band with him. My friend was less impressed with Nickel Creek - I think he was expecting something along the lines of bluegrass but it seems that they've moved way beyond the confines of bluegrass. He agreed though that Thile is a phenomenal musician. So it probably depends on your expectations. Anyway, hope you enjoy the show!

I saw Howie Day earlier this year and although his music doesn't appeal to me he's very inventive. Especially the loop recorder mentioned ootee1. He started off with a little riff, adding in slaps off his guitar and in the end it sounds like a full heavy dance track. Really interesting to him build it up.

YES YES YES! i saw them in the portand state theater on the 15th of october. it was the greatest thing ever. the portand state theater (maine) is a small shabby place with a mosh area up front. there wasnt much moshing but it was amazing. me and my friend made our way right up leaning against the stage front and center. thile was right on top of us. he was wearing some crazy elf shoes and he almost stepped on me several times. he was swinging the dudenbostel at me like a weapon at times. he ended his set with "two turn tables and a microphone" by beck jammed into the fox. it was amazing, he signed deciever for me and a pick. whoa, that was longer then i intended...

oh, howie day right. there were some girls behind us that drove from canada to see the show just for him (about 8 hours). i dont think i would drive that amount for him, but he was alright. not exactly my type of music, but i suppose he could appeal to some more than others.
My brother (not a big BG or acoustic music fan by any stretch of the imagination) saw the show in MA earlier this month on my recommendation. He was absolutely BLOWN AWAY by Nickel Creek and became an instant convert. He wound up walking out on Howie Day though ... I think he said something about not wanting to let anything or anyone disturb the amazing set he'd just heard from Nickel Creek ...

I didn't even go because it was a co-billing. I wonder if they would have let me pay half price just to watch Nickel Creek.

I saw Nickel Creek and Howie Day in Newport News, VA and I have to say that the Nickel Creek part added up to create the best night of my life! Regarding Howie Day...he definitely has come cool stuff going on, but he came off to me as somewhat full of himself versus the amazing kindness and general manners of Sara, Chris, and Sean. His music was cool, but as a nerdy musician (I also play both acoustic and electric guitar,) the looping didn't amaze me- at all. With that said, Nickel Creek's set was perfect. It being a co-headlining show, the set didn't last very long, but they came out by there bus afterwards and kept us company with more magnificent music and conversation. I was front row, dead center, and right in front of Chris's microphone. He would walk torwards the very edge of the stage, right in front of me, when taking most of his solos and they just melted my face away! I love Chris in all aspects (not in a gay way http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif ) but his musicianship is beyond belief! Way too contemperary for a lot of the old time guys I guess, but I think he holds a fair argument for the best mandolin player in current exsistence- and he's not all about playing triplets at 500 mph, he can play slow lines with an equal amount of passion! For those of you out there who don't think Nickel Creek are a bluegrass band, you're completely wrong. They're just as much a bluegrass band as they are anything else. Just thing how extremely progressive Bill Monroe sounded back in the day to the orginal "old-tymers." Maybe the stuff they play in their shows or choose to put on their records is not bluegrass- thats absolutely true, but they can bust out the bluegrass and tear it to shreds. A wonderful example of this was after the show. They came outside to play in front of their bus to us hardcore fans who waited afterwards and treated us to another hour of awesome music. A lot of people were requesting their more well-known songs off their first album and such, but the band just wanted to have a good time playing lesser-known songs. They managed to create some of the most amazing bluegrass I've ever heard, not to mention an excellent Elliot Smith cover. It makes me think, if Nickel Creek one day put together an album of just their favortie bluegrass tunes, all the people who originally claimed to hate Nickel Creek would have a puddle of drool at their feet! So what's the moral of this long, drawn-out, barely concert-related testimony? Go see Nickel Creek if you get the oppurtunity, it's a wonderful experience and by all means, disregard your watch and stay by their bus after the show!

I went to see them in Bloomington Indiana and the only complaint I have is that is was a co-headliner tour. Not enough Creek! The guy I took was totally amazed by them, even though earlier this year he swore up and down he wouldn't join my Nickel Creek "cult". All I can say to that is I always get my way:D gotcha!
As far as the looping goes I love that stuff and was impressed but as far as Howie's music its average and after the third song it got old..just my opinion no slam intended. If you want to see looping at it's finest try Victor Wooten he will get tons of instruments up there and just go at it.
