Hi Everyone, Just a quick heads up that there is a benefit concert planned for Larry Rice to help offset the enormous medical costs as he undergoes treatment for Lung Cancer. The concert will happen on December 12th, 2004 in Tallahassee Florida at the Moon. Current line up includes the Vassar Clements and Tony Rice Unit, plus a bunch of other great musicians. Stay tuned to the website www.tonyrice.com for more info

Don't do everything your heroes do....I'm sorry to hear about that, Larry's mandolin playing always gets me off; his solos are right on the money...

I second that. There is something about his playing I love...I can always tell when Larry Rice is doing the mando work on a CD.

BTW, my alltime favorite mando tune of his is "Uncle Larry's Garden" from the out-of-print album "Larry & Wyatt Rice."

Has anyone else out there ever learned this tune???

FYI, here's a pop up link to updated information. #Of course, if you go to Tony's site, this comes up automatically. #

I just got my 2 reserved tickets for me and a picking buddy. #We'll drive over early Sunday afternoon, grab a room and go enjoy the show. #Anyone going?

What a lineup.....of interest to the Mando disciples, Dawg and Josh Pinkham are going to be there. (along with a slew of other great performers.)

I hate the reason this is happening, but I'm grateful to be able to see all these performers under one roof!!

i'm hesitant to post this, as i wish well for larry's recovery.

but the last two "benefit" concerts i supported ended up with shady after effects.
one being the TR benefit after the big flood in 92(?) that wiped tony out. where i later learned the funds were........ah, used differently.
the second was the Dave Evans benefit to hire a legal team to defend him after he shot into an occupied trailer. those funds too, were .........used differently. he blew the money on certain things, tried to defend himself, and wound up in the pokey.

of course, there are more good stories than bad, the McReynolds benefits, etc, but there is something about bluegrass musicians getting into difficult situations and people tring to help out, that seem to get sidetracked.

After some crafty internet surfing and local calls, I found these two hotels very close to The Moon.

This first one is right across the street from The Moon. (I reserved a room for a total of @ $44.05)

Motel 6 Downtown 1027 Apalachee Parkway Tallahassee, FL 32301 (850) 877-6171

This one's down a little farther away:

Holiday Inn Capital East 1355 Apalachee Parkway, Tallahassee, FL (850) 877-3171 (Rooms were @ $65 and up)

Heads up: It is graduation weekend for all the local colleges/universities according to the Moon management. They are expecting a ZOO Friday and Saturday.

Say, can anyone give me the scoop on Larry's F5? It looks like a late 50's or early 60's F5, based on the modern-style Gibson logo... Who did the tree of life inlay on the neck? How long has he played this mando, and where did he get it?

Inquiring minds want to know! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

That's one huge negative side benefit shows. It gives the world the assumed right to scrutinize every aspect of your finances from then on. Thank God I have never had to have one for myself, 'tho I've played at a good number of them. If you can't participate w/o worrying about it, then don't participate.

I am so sorry to hear of Larry Rices condition and wish him all the best. I was honored to be asked by him to play dobro on his "Artesia" project, and treasure the memories of that session. Posting this under a friends name. Sincerely, Steve Wilson

I learned a lot from larrys playing on JD Crowe and the Kentucky Mtn Boys album Blackjack. One of the best all around albums I have ever heard.
Steve you are no slouch musician yourself...you always were one of my favorite singers...i learned a lot from you... another thread.... influences
