Oct-16-2004, 2:42pm
I saw Lex Price (mandolinist) perform lastnight with Mindy Smith, And I gotta tell you that boy sounds better than ever.
The whole band sounded amazing..... If anyone gets a chance to see her live please do, you can really hear what lex is doin alot clearer on his mando live than on the album. Tasteful! Although the album is great aswell.
Get the album. Mindy Smith- One moment more.

I got to hear him play last Spring. It was just him and Mindy duo on stage without a full band. It was the first time I had heard him play and it was a good surprise.

I agree, I dont think when people go see Mindy Smith they expect the treat of getting to hear a very good mando picker too. I've known Lex for a while, from when living in Nashville, and he'd sit down and play so many styles. I cant imagine the jams him and Chris Thile whipped up while on tour together.

He uses the schertler Dyn pickup, with the pre a II in concert. And it sounds so awsome.

I think Lex has been playing a Stiver but this I DO know. While in Chicago this past weekend he met Martin Brunkalla, tried out Brunk #2, fell in love with it and BOUGHT it. I am not making this up. Martin is a personal friend of mine and this is how I know.

Mando red, well thats pretty cool that Lex liked it so much , Cause hes one of my favorite mandolin players. Hes also a picky dude when it comes to mandos. So your friends with Martin? Ok did you get to play mine when before?

Yes I did Dem. In fact, I was at a small bluegrass festival this summer and after a workshop, a few people including me were hanging around picking (I was playing your future mandolin) and a newspaper photographer came around and took our picture. I was the focal point WITH Brunk #1. It was on the front page of the local newspaper the next day. I know what a great mando it is. I'll bet you are really enjoying it.

Honestly I cant even begin to describe how much this instrument means to me. Sounds much better now than it did when I got it , didnt think was ever possible. So just out of my curiosity how would you describe the tone and feel of Brunk#1? And did you get to play Brunk#2? Thats cool that Lex fell in love with it. That boy was offered alot of free mandolins too. Martin must be really proud.

So, getting back to Lex (Dern it!) I happened to see him play lastnight (with Mindy Smith) here in Nashville at the Belcourt theater. #What a treat! #I wasn't that up to speed on Ms.Smith's band, so I wasn't expecting a mandolin that night. #I did see an F-shaped case near the back of the stage, so my hopes WERE up. #Anyway, he is a great picker. #My only suggestion would be More Mandolin!!, but he did fine on the acoustic guitar and the lavender Danelectro too!

We sat pretty close, so I did notice the Scheretler set-up, but I couldn't quite make out the brand of mandolin.

Did you happen to notice if the mandolin had a fingerboard extension or not?

I saw him with Mindy when she opened up for Nickel Creek. It was just him and Mindy on stage and I must say that he is an extrordinare (did I spell that right?). I think it would be cool if him and Thile did soemthing together. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
