I'm planning to attend the CMSA convention in Philadelphia in a few weeks. #I'll be there with a mandocello. #I've had a peek at the workshop/event schedule and there doesn't seem to be anything formally scheduled for 'cello (other than orchestra rehearsals).

I've never been to a CMSA convention before so I don't know if it's customary for events or jams etc. related to the mandocello to arise informally, or not. #As mentioned, there are rehearsals for the various sections of the orchestra, including 'cello section rehearsals. #But beyond that, does any one out there have a sense of what to expect in terms of mandocello happenings? #Thanks.

This will be my first one also (tho I am not a mandocellist, nor do i play one on TV). I am sure that a few of us will be wanting to go off an play various pieces and I am sure that as far as impromptu playing, there is always room for 'cello http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I will prob bring a stack of various small ensemble music so it would be fun for those of us going from thie board to get together and finally meet face to face and instrument to instrument.

I, too will be playing 'cello, and look forward to meeting the others of my section and checking out what everyone's playing. As far as more formal activities - I don't remember such happening at last year's convention when I was playing mandola (or maybe I slept in that morning!) but there were four mandolists that got up a quartet and played at the lunchtime open mike. A cello quartet would be fun! I haven't arranged anything for this combo yet, but I've heard Jeff Dearinger's version of the Perry Mason theme for four mandocellos. Maybe he could be persuaded to bring that along, and any other such arrangements he's done. Come to think of it, he may have led a 'cello workshop at some point last year. Anyway, maybe us cellists could get together and jam or whatever on our own if nothing's on the schedule. For now, I'm still busy working out the shifts and fingerings for the orchestra parts (not to mention the harmonics!)
See you there...
