I'm starting on Harlan #3, and am planning on doing side-binding. #My question is: #Is the peghead normally side-bound also? or is it top-bound?
I know it's probably all a matter of preference, but I was just wondering if anyone out there has built one either or both ways, and could offer an opinion as to which looks better?
Thanks!

Most Loars and current gibsons have top-bound pegheads. Not many Loars have the triple side binding. Most MM's I have seen had side binding.
Personally I like the side binding.

HOGO..actually most Loars are side bound on the peghead.. but side bound pegheads are not necessarily to be associated with side bound bodies. Essentially all '23s and most of the first batch of Feb 24's are side bound (whether it be double or triple). The triple bound of face pegheads showed up late in the batch of Feb '24's.

Triple bound on the side pegheads showed up in May '23. Prior to that the were double or single bound on the sides

Darryl is right. My brain didn't work that day. I spent too much time looking at Loar Fern pegheads last week and they have the top binding.
Darryl, do you have info on how many of Loars were double/triple sidebound or topbound p/h and f/b plus various combinations with top/ side bound bodies?
And have you noticed the way the miters on top bound p/h's are joined? On many if not all where the glue line is visible the join is not a straight line but looks like a small curve. Like it wasn't cut with straight chisel but convex one. but maybe that's another optical illusion on the pics.
