I'll post this here since I did not get any hits over in equipment. Is there any tonal difference between bone and mop? I know bone is more durable but not as dense as mop. I have never had a mop nut on a mandolin and would consider one if there is some appreciable gain. Thanks in advance ---- Lp

I'm having my wife's Martin and my newly acquired F-9 done with fossilized ivory.

I bought a fossilized ivory Brekke bridge insert and a nut blank from a forum member. I never got around to putting in the nut, but I took the insert out after a while. I just didn't like what it did to the sound of my Newson F-5. There was nothing wrong with the insert, I guess that it was just an experiment that didn't work in this instance.

Because only four notes are affected by the nut material I wouldn't sweat it that much. All the other notes you play are fretted.

I agree Lee http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif . The durability of the bone is worth leaving the mando as is. I could not tell much difference between the tone on mandolins with bone and with mop nuts. Maybe at some point down the road I'll give the mop a try.
