I have recently purchased a Mandobird (IV) with the intention of giving it to my daughter on her 9th birthday. But since she reads sheet music (from piano training), I'd like to get her some music to work on. I found one thing on Amazon called "Classic Rock Tunes for Mandolin" (and passed on the two companion books).

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

There is a fairly new book of mandolin arrangements of Beatles songs now available (http://www.amazon.com/Beatles-Mandolin/dp/1423484045/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1280631734&sr=8-1).

I don't have it, so I can't speak to its quality or value, but I was thinking of picking it up in the near future.

I'm really looking forward to seeing other replies...Thanks for the thread.

If she has friends who play, you can get a bunch of quartet arrangements of rock music from Mona Lisa Sound (published by the Hampton Rock String Quartet). Pretty nifty stuff: http://www.monalisasound.com/ProductsWorking.html.

Has anyone bought one of these books? Would you recommend one?

Since your daughter is able to read notation you should check out the numerous rock and roll song books for guitar that advertise authentic transcriptions. The ones I've seen include notation and tab. She can ignore the guitar tab. Many of these books have multiple guitar parts as per the actual layered studio recording.

Hey Jon, would you be kind enough to list the twelve songs included in that book "classic rock songs"? I've seen it on Amazon but can't find any details of its content.

Darren, I think it was Jim's post that mentioned the "classic rock songs".

I've had the Beatles book for a couple weeks now and have enjoyed working through it....I've been playing mando for close to a year, been dabbling in a lot of stuff - fiddle tunes, irish tunes, blues and rags, medieval...have about fifty songs down pretty well. The old Beatle tunes are a nice diversion and the book translates the melodies well to mandolin, my personal favorites being "Norwegian Wood", "Yellow Submarine", "Here, There, and Everywhere".... I read tabs mostly and find the notation in the Beatles book very user-friendly, I'm thinking the musical notation would be equally easy to read, especially for someone with a strong piano background.
