View Full Version : A Good Answer
Just curious, what is the best answer you've given to some one who has asked "What is that?"
When someone asked about my OM I said it was a mandolin before taxes...they didn't get it...
Someone once asked me - while I was lugging my Fender Telecaster in case - "what's THAT!?" - I replied.."a giant harmonica" ... hee.. hee.. (** p.s. at airports I occasionly would reply... "my drugs" - I DON'T use THAT line anymore). http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

One perpetually high and/or drunk girl out front of a local coffeeshop that I play regularly would see me coming and say "Hey man, did you bring your little f***ing banjo thing?" #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif
I gave up trying to educate this gal a long time ago.
I might start telling her it's the world's biggest Jaw Harp.

Tell them it's an acoustical wave form generator...one can modify the wave form nearly-continuously by simply altering the mechanics of the generator itself...it's magic!

Tell them it's a stupid detector. If they ask how it works, just say, "It magically causes stupid people to start asking questions." http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Oh, in my "chicks dig mandos" post, I didn't mention that I dropped by the local Guitar Centre to play one of their mandolins ($250 Epi locked in a glass case...) and ended up telling a stoned/drunk lady what it was...
Twice I have run into women who seemed stoned and talkative at the GC acoustic room... and I don't frequent GC that much. Strange.
I say this all supports my "I am so hot" hypothesis that recieved only very minor acknowledgement in the other thread...

The drunk topic made me recall something; There is an old drunk who lives acroos the street from my father. One night I was sitting out front playing a little and he came over (drinking his magic juice from a cup). And he says "Larry (my name is Brian and I've known him for 20 years), what is that thing?" I said "It's a Mandolin."
"A Banjolina", no a "mandolin" "Oh a mandalow", "mandolin" "Cool I've always loved mandolinas...my brother used to play one I think..."
The next morning, he asked if I was going play my banjo...
