Cat...The banjo of the animal kingdom...

Ed Goist
Jun-29-2010, 7:32pm
From the Lifestyle Section
New York, NY: "Cats...Everything on their terms", the latest full orchestra composition by Avant Garde American composer Philip Glass might be considered unusual even for Glass. To be properly performed, a domestic, short-haired cat must be precisely positioned on the sheet music of each musician in the orchestra for the piece's entire 90 minutes, so as to display only the notes necessary to play the piece. As a result, at the piece's premiere at Carnegie Hall last weekend, a cat wrangler was assigned to each musician in the Philharmonic. Amazingly, the performance went off with neither hitch nor cat fight, and the capacity audience responded quite positively to the performance. Neither Glass, nor the pictured feline, were available for comment at press time. An encore performance with The Boston Pops is scheduled for mid-August.

Cats... everything on their terms. Please suggest a caption for this photo. NOTE: best caption wins a Mandolin Cafe ball cap on the house.

Youse guys! Well, knock yourselves out, just remember the contest is over. :))
And hitting Reply With Quote means you copy the photo as well, unless you edit the quoted part.
I dunno - seemed obvious to me, but maybe not to everybody ... :whistling:

Some people only read the first post of a thread to find out what it's about before replying - which, in this case, didn't mention any submission deadline, unfortunately...

Hey hey hey - no gloating! :) :))
Be that as it may ... congratulations! And for recognizing (what one could see of) the piece as a gigue - very sharp. ;)

It's not merely "a" gigue, but The gigue... making my caption all the more apropos. :)
What, me gloat? Moi? :disbelief:
Hey, it's the only contest I've won since I was about 16... cut me some slack!
Are there many mando folks in the Keys? Sometimes I wonder if we're an endangered species in Florida! LOL

... Hey, it's the only contest I've won since I was about 16... cut me some slack!
Slack cheerfully cut. Hey, at least you won something. I never won anything until I was over 30, and then it was a Yugoslavian calculator I got as a door prize at a company Christmas party. :crying:
I know I would have won a hat with the enormous number of extremely high quality witticisms I offered, except I already won one once, and it's only fair to share the wealth. :whistling:

There used to be a couple others. One guy left town, one guy died, that leaves me. :) I'm not kidding.
Cribbing from old stage banter:
Guitarist: He's the best mandolin picker in the whole ... (dramatic pause) .. island.
Me: Well, there is that one guy who sleeps under the Cow Key Bridge - and I drop off a six-pack every day to keep him there.
(Note: Cow Key Channel is the last bit of water you cross before getting to Key West. Cow Key (nka Stock Island) was named for its use as grazing land in the olden days.)
Anyway, I did join the Northern Florida Social Group, which debated a bit before permitting admittance to a SoFla rapscallion, but I haven't participated too much in any of the SGs I've joined. BTW & FWIW, I never played so much country music before I came down here. A lot of people who drive down are from the South and like their country music. I don't mind too much, as long as it's not Top 40; keeps me from having to play quite so much Jimmy Buffett! :))

Ha ha! Never stereotype cats. This one's our mellowest, living out on our screened patio since last Feb., when somebody dumped him in the street after neutering and declawing him, and he let me take about ten pictures to get one that was good enough (of me)!
The other nine who live indoors, all (finally) adults, range from several formerly homeless and unwanted, on-their-way-to-the-shelter kittens, to a brother and sister from a feral mom's 2 subsequent litters where we used to live, to a mom cat from this neighborhood and her daughter and step-daughter (the latter being an orphan who was dropped off here by someone who knew we had a nursing mama), to a very badly injured baby kitten left for dead at 4 weeks of age, for whom we got to play Good Samaritan (and who is now our most spoiled little princess, who sleeps between us in bed!). And that's not even counting the 6 who are no longer with us, and the 4 other kittens of Mama's who we found new homes for... every cat has a completely unique and different purr-sonality, from laid-back to lunatic and everything in between; and we've got bits of it all right here!

Well, it's the look on his face, and also Scott's cat's, who started it all. I realize we're anthropomorphizing here (ie, interpreting the cat's expression in human terms), but they both look like they would say, if they could, "Just leave me the %&$# alone! I was fine till you came along and stuck that thing in my face." :))

I understand big words. ;) Dunno how the felines perceive "that thing in stuck in my face", but the high point of this fellow's life is surely human attention. When I go out there on the patio, he follows around in my footsteps and goes into an ecstatic purring frenzy. He loves to be picked up and held more than all but one of our other cats. Sometimes he will gently nip at my heels to make me pay more attention to him.
That's why I had to let him stay - (he literally found our house, came into the garage and sat just outside the door to the inside, persistently calling for someone until I opened the door - he just knew our home was a cat-friendly one, and I swear we have an invisible neon sign over it that only cats can see!) It broke my heart that someone could just toss out such a big sweetie, especially after leaving him utterly defenseless like that. He doesn't seem to mind the camera. He's more curious about it than anything.

Oh, I get it. Absolutely. He may be having the time of his life, but he just looks so ... serious or P.O.'d or something like. That's what I meant by my big word - we tend to read animals' faces by human standards, and although I don't exactly see big smiles on either your or Scott's cat's faces, they may indeed be feeling quite jolly. I'm just going with the funny. It's funnier that way. ;)

Love to eat them mousies
Mousies what I love to eat
Bite they little heads off
Nibble on they tiny feet
With many apologies to B. Kliban (I've always thought of this as a blues):
For some reason I always envisioned Tiny Tim or Leon Redbone singing it.
