Orrin has been busy teaching and making flatpicking instructional DVD's I just bought one from Steven Grossman's guitar instructional website and it is probably the best one I have ever bought on bluegrass flatpicking for guitar.

Man this show is about a 3 1/2 hour drive from me I sure would like to go!

In 1986-87 I took lessons from Orrin Star, who at the time was one of the longest residents at a commune in Cambridge, Massachusetts (I think he was there for like 15 years). My lessons were in his quarters, where he had his instruments and studio stuff. He played a mandolin with a frog on the headstock and played it real well. I think I saw that the frog headstock is the Kettler mandolin, but we never discussed it. At the time I was playing my Gibson A-3 and my Aria Pro II PM-780 (still have both of them). I really enjoyed learning some tunes from him and liked his style - never saw him in concert though.

Hi Folks:

Thanks for the positive posts. #I relocated from Brooklyn to Cheverly, Maryland
(inside the Beltway, near DC) on September 1st. So I'm living and teaching down here
now. (details about all this on my website).

The house in Cambridge was a co-op (not a commune ;) #- but I'm sure it may have appeared
like that to the casual observer; )

Best,

Orrin

Hey Orrin - welcome to the cafe! I still listen to those tapes and play the tunes you taught me - Leather Britches, Colored Aristocracy, Angiline the Baker, etc.

A good tune Orrin wrote was "Too Much Mustard"

I still play those tunes Fat Dad (whose real name is???).

And - regrettably - I didn't pen "Too Much Mustard"; it's an old swing tune
that my duo partner in the late 70's Gary Mehalick found on an old
recording somewhere. (We recorded it on our now-out-of-print "Premium
Blend" album on Flying Fish.)
