View Full Version : Routing out bindings

I recently acquired a partially done F-2/4 style mandolin which needs the fingerboard glued in place, binding, and finishing best I can tell. I have bound the fingerboard and will glue it on today, but now I have to cut the channels for the binding and then bind it.

I've decided to not bind the inside of the scroll (as in the early F models) and not bind the headstock mostly because the more I do, the more likely I will screw it up.

What is the best way to cut the channels for the binding? I have routes and a dremel tool plus the Stew-Mac thingy for cutting channels. I also have a nice set of chisels sharpened to perfection. I have some woodworking skills and am not afraid to make mistakes, but I need guidance.

Mike, not to put you off but since this topic has been well discussed on various threads with many pictures, I recommend you search on “routing for binding”. I just tried it and found most of the threads I remembered on the subject. Also StuMac has a good binding primer on there web site. I’m sure others will help here as well but there is allot of great information on those past threads.
