For the first time in a long time I went into our local music shop. I noticed they had bought a number of Indiana mandolins. The packing boxes say made in China. Both the price $145 and the sound and workmanship was what your expect from that price point, but not bad. I got a kick out of the name. I guess they figure since their neighbor state (Kentucky) has done so well selling mandolins, they would try Indiana.

What I like about Indiana is that it is the home of two towns after which Monroe named tunes, Santa Claus (near Christmas Lake) and Stoney Lonesome. Don't know about the mandos though.

I think that the Indiana brand is distributed by the same folks who do Morgan Monroe instruments. I live in Monroe County, next to Morgan County, and there is a Morgan Monroe State forest near here. I'm told that Morgan Monroe has their HQ in Indianapolis.

They had some quality control problems some years back and I ran into a guy in Indy who said that he worked for them and that they'd been having a difficult time with that.

I expect that all over America there are folks who need a $145 mandolin with the name of a state on it.
