And the Tony Rice Unit on Friday as well as the Peter Rowan / Tony Rice Quartet on Sat.
I guess Tony and Dawg get paid a coupla times. I look forward to seeing them play
in all these different bands! Maybe T. will sit in with the DGQ as a bonus!

You know what would be a real treat? If David and Tony could get a hold of all of the neat guitars and mandolins that were used for the original recording - now that would be something!

Maybe we could provide some of them with our personal collections. Kenc

Somebody should talk to Dexter!

THe instruments on the Tone Poem CDs are a large part of the package. On stage they could just be a distraction. The real beauty comes from Tony and David. Just a thought.

Boy, that would be a heck of a Mando Tasting now wouldn't it?

I kinda disagree - I think it would be a neat presentation for the instruments to be a big part of the performance. David and Tony (and maybe someone like Dexter or George Gruhn) could talk about them as part of the show.

Anyway, I know it's just a pipe-dream, but the Wintergrass folks have been pretty creative in their approach to putting the festival together - this seems like a real golden opportunity for some outside-of-the-box thinking.

There were two shows like you are describing, back when Tone Poems came out. I saw one in Carmel, the other was in Nashville.
I'll be quite happy with just the Dawg Loar and Tony playing Clarence's D-28.
The Gasoline Brothers are an incredible duo!

"There were two shows like you are describing, back when Tone Poems came out. #I saw one in Carmel, the other was in Nashville."

I have a recording of a Tone Poems show at the Avalon Ballroom in SF in '94 with the MC (Dexter?) announcing each vintage guitar and mandolin, and then the Dawg and Tony having a go at them...

Pretty cool!

Very cool I'd say!

Sounds like this idea has been tried before with some measure of success. #I think it would be a real kick in the butt to see all of these instruments too! That's what I like about Wintergrass - there are always these little sub plots going on...mando tasting and swapping, dances, photography shows, firewood sales.... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Just an FYI, I saw Dawg and Martin Taylor in Boulder several years back playing as a duo to promote Tone Poems 2, and they each brought out at least 5 or so different guitars and mando's. They told stories about each instrument and why they chose it for the particluar song and then proceeded to play the song with the instruments from the recording. I don't know if they had every instrument they used from the album, but it was awesome and didn't impede the show at all. Hopefully Tony and Dawg will do the same.
