I recently decided to blow the dust off "Music Theory for modern mandolin" by Thomas Ohmsen. What a great and somewhat overwhelming book.If I had multiple brains I dont think I could absorb that book.
Where does Mr Ohmsen come from? and does he have any other books? This is a awesome book and I have known about it for years but find it odd that there is nothing else by such a knowledgable person.
He also put out a fiddle tune book, which notes out about 15 common tunes, and dissects them pretty well. I found his arrangements somewhat pedestrian - is that a word http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

Hi arrangements (which are for educational use, not for performing, I assume) may be "pedestrian," but his playing certainly is not. He's one of the finest mandolin players I've ever listened to.

I've studied that darn book for nearly 20 years. #Been through it a couple times and I know a hell of a lot more about music now than I did before. #I'm a better player for it, as well. #A great work that could be titled Modern Music Theory.

I am working my way through that as well. I really think it has helped me get better, but there is almost too much information for my little brain. Maybe when I go through it five or six times it will all sink in.

My suggestion is to take it from the first page and work slooooowly. #Don't skip a step even if it takes a few weeks. #Who's in a hurry, anyway.

I finally got the book...after asking for it 2 yrs in a row for xmas. went though 180 pages yesterday. this is great book and i would highly recommend it for anyone wanting to become a better musican and wanting to understand what and why they are playing. Oh by the way, I wouldn't recommend anyone else going through 180 pgs in one day unless you have already been through music theory. Other wise you may get lost. But lots and lots of useful tips and info.!
