I used to have a couple of reprints of Gibson Instrument catalogs, I believe they were the "H' and "J" catalogs. I bought them from Elderly Instruments about 10 years ago for around $10./ $15. apiece. Unfortunately I think the catalogs were misplaced and I can't find them.

I know that there are CDs available with all the Gibson catalogs on them, but I'd like to get a physical paper reprint. Does anyone know of a source that sells these old Gibson catalog reprints?

Thanks,

Rob

N,O and P had the Loar era instruments. The only place I've seen the reprints lately is on ebay. Expect to pay a bit more then 15 cents a piece for them. I've also seen some original Loar era catalogs go for $500 or more a few weeks ago.

The most recent vintage instrument email update from Elderly (which I got in my inbox today but deleted already - sorry!) listed a Gibson catalog from 1921 for sale - I'm pretty sure it was somewhere in the range of $300.

Cheers,
Jill

Thanks, I've seen quite a few originals for sale, but the ones I'm looking for were reprints that typically sold for around $15. apiece. I remember Elderly used to sell several different ones. Aside from the illustrations and early photos of Mando orchestras, there was quite a bit of entertaining Gibson marketing banter in them.

There are quite a few scans of vintage catalogs (Gibson and others) available free from acousticmusic.org (http://www.acousticmusic.org/Instrument-Catalogs-sp-87.html).

Nice material on this site, Jim, and some things I hadn't seen before, like this ad. (Forgive me if this is a repost.) Pretty graphically gives the 'potato bug' argument some 'legs.' I like the Brandt, Bay State, Regal, labeling on the bowlbacks. Even Waldo (!?) is seen as the enemy. (Why not L+H? De Meglio?) Perhaps a tad xenophobic, but even for a loyal bowl-head, it is a funny drawing. You can get a better quality .pdf of the image at the site.
