hey, I was wondering if any of you ever tryed removing one of the top strings (G), on the OM and playing it this way. Since the top strings seems to be the most jangley, it seems to give more clarity.

I'd rather add a 3rd string and make it more jangly! :)

A good friend of mine plays a "seven string" 'zouk with only a single "G" string (though he tunes to AEAE). He prefers that sound, and he certainly makes it sound great.

He has octave strings on the lower E course (unisons on the top two courses), and has told me that, on his instrument, using octaves on the lower A course is too "jangly" for the sound he's after.

I'd say that the G strings are the bottom strings and the E strings are the top ones...

I have a friend who single strings his mandocello...I really love the 'jangle' or what I think of as more of a Selmer-Maccaferri style "honk" on the Sobell, and wouldn't dream of single stringing any of the courses...of course YMMV!

I also love the drones and jangle of an OM, just on my OM the bass (G) can get a little muddy sounding sometimes. So thought I would experiment, not sure yet.

Sean Tyrrell strings a Gibson in singles, to interesting effect.

I have a Waldzither tuned as a C GG DD AA EE. I'd use heavier gauge strings if my OM's GG sounded jangly...
