How did I miss this one?!!! Just downloaded my FLAC version of “Frank’n’Dawg / Melody Monsters” from http://www.acousticoasis.com

This is David Grisman’s new download site, filled with some interesting newly released material, as well as older live shows, available for the first time. I’m not an Itunes mp3, download kinda guy.....I go for high fidelity.......and for an extra two bucks you can even download a FLAC, or CD quality version. Yeah baby!!!

“Melody Monsters” is some of the most beautiful recordings of acoustic jazz string playing I have ever heard. The tunes are from the Great American Songbook.........stuff you might hear Ella, Frank, Ray, or Willie singing........classics with beautiful melodies, like “Stardust” composed in 1927 by Hoagy Carmichael. This Frank’n’Dawg version starts with a wonderful, and long, improvised guitar into by Vignola, and there is Grisman playing ever so cool chords behind him. Then the mandolin takes over with the melody.......and Dawg has all the technique in spades, to bring out the best in the melody........taste, timing, and tone.......in and out of triplets, or a flurry of syncopated signature Dawg licks at the turnaround, so smooth and melodic everywhere, especially in his expressive tremolo.......really soulful, heartfelt playing, and did I say great TONE.

This music is really faithful to the melody, the creativity of these duets comes mostly in the arrangements, the chord voicings, or the groove and rhythm patterns.... even where on the neck they play the melody, the dynamics of volume in their playing, or the tags, something as simple as how they kick off or end a tune. This music is about melody, rather than being just about hot licks and improvisation. I found it to be incredibly beautiful music.......think Homer & Jethro at their straightest and best, or Grisman’s Tone Poems II, with Martin Taylor. This music takes it to another level. Frank Vignola plays perfect backup, the way he accents parts, changes gears varying his dynamics, the way he throws in a few measures of harmony & back into the chords.......is pure genius. His solo intro to “Georgia” is worth the price of admission itself. But I find these versions, of these compositions, to be true duets, as they obviously both are really listening each other in order to get in sync like this. The sensitive musical conversation & exchange, of two master musicians, makes this recording one I’ll listen to over & over.

Other selections include “Hello Young Lovers” a show tune from the 1951 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, The King and I, or we all know "April Showers", or how about “Some Day My Prince Will Come” which was a popular song from Walt Disney’s 1937 animated movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. I have great versions of Miles Davis doing this. Jazz cats have played these kinds of popular songs as instrumentals for years, because it is great material, pure classics........but I'll tell you, these mandolin and guitar duet versions are special! I’ve never heard them played on acoustic stringed instruments, and recorded this well before, it is like the musicians are sitting in the room with you! The recording is so pure, I can ever hear a few different mandolins being used on different tracks.

This music makes me want to go out & get some of these charts, and find a guitar playing buddy. These aren’t blazing fast tunes, just beautiful slow and mid tempo melodies, and I’m thinking there are a lot of lessons to be had trying to play along with this music. Acoustic Oasis has a winner...........keep ‘em coming David!!!

As you can see I have been contacted by Craig at Acoustic Oasis and I have absolutely confidence we'll get this downloading problem taken care of. I may have jumped the gun a bit with my griping... seems he never received my emails. Ah the joys of the cyberworld...

Craig at Acoustic Oasis got me all squared away with my FLAC files of Melody Monsters. Happily listening as we speak. I wish I weren't such an ignoramus when it comes to computer technology and stuff... oh well, all's well that ends well. A BIG thanks to Craig and David for taking care of their customers.

Hope you dig it!

I'm loving this Art... has that same intimate feel as the original Grisman-Garcia recording. Just great, relaxed playing by two masters. Neither trying to impress... just laying it down. Maybe they should call this one TONE MONSTERS... what fantastic tone these cats get... man!

I keep playing it over & over.......now I pick just like that in my dreams.

Once burned to a CD, on my rig in my sound room......I'm thinking I hear 3 different mandolins, a woodier, dry sounding vintage instrument & maybe a coupla different newer ones.

Congratulations, Arthur! I didn't know you were the official "archivist of the David Grisman Quintet" (Still Inside, p.99)...

I just down loaded this tonight and I'm on my second go round of listening. The thing that hits you right away is the deep rich tone, and Dawgs careful manipulation of all the dynamics inherent in that. Mostly simple melody playing that's always in the groove, and tone! Did I mention the tone? ;) Lush and beautiful simple melody playing of the highest order on these Jazz standards. What can I say? other then listening to this puts a big smile on my face. Highly recommended.

I first met David when he played in OAITW, followed him into the Great American Music Band, Great American String Band, and when he started his own band I had a good live recording rig with a 1/2 track Revox, & offered my services to David. Back in the early days of the Quintet I used to record the gigs & mix some of the shows for the house. Todd Phillips built & repaired mandolins in the back of my art studio & a lot of musicians would fall by. Mike & Darol lived close by & my studio became a musicians hang out. As my career as an artist took off I didn't have time to continue staying out late, living musicians hours......and also keep my own trip going with morning meetings etc. I was there for the good ol' days though.......the fly on the wall backstage, in the studio etc. It was inspiring times.......inspired my art, inspired me to play the mandolin.......it has been fun watching the careers of the DGQ alumni, as well as the current band. This kind of music has pretty much been the soundtrack of my life.

Yes, and it was a treat to read your (and Jon's) "souvenirs" in the Jon Sievert/Dawgology thread! I met these guys in 1977, but they didn't come so often here! So, I think I'm a bit jealous...
:)
(And please, pardon my poor english)
