In search of a dynamic microphone. #Purpose and primary use of the microphone will be to record mandolin and occasionaly a guitar for personal use. #Recommendations? Specs to consider, evaluate, to avoid?

Shure beta & SM57 seems like the one standard for #you to compare the others.
Recording? by the nature of the mechanisim #consensers have a wider frequency response range, lighter mass to move, I guess. but I don;t get out much
test lots of them , go somewhere with a wide variety if you can.

You are correct, condenser's are better for mandolin. The reason for acquiring a dynamic mic at this time is that my PC sound card has a mic input and going with a dynamic mic will allow me to eliminate pre-amp and phantom power supply

Dynamic mics can be the mic of choice on a mandolin, even if one has a locker-full of U47s...
Some good dynamic mics for mando include the Beyer M201, the EV RE15 or 16, the Sennheiser 421, AKG D2000, the Shure 545, and the aforementioned and ubiquitous SM57...

FWIW both Rode[nt3]and AKG[c1000s] makes a 9v battery internally powered condenser, so check them out too.

That definetly is a great option to look for. I really love my AT Pro 37r, but last night got stuck!! went to the gig using "their" PA and lo and behold they didnt have Phantom.I know there are the direct boxes available but that just means one more piece of Hardware.
