View Full Version : '03 F ? Finally done
Just wanted to say thanks for all the help I've received from Mandolin Cafe contributors. This project has been in the works for too many years. It really felt good to string it up and hear what it sound like. I'm sure I'm biased, but it sounds great to me (except for that buzz on the first fret of the E strings.)
George, that thing is honkin' gorgeous.
Yours is one of the most beautiful mandolins or instruments for that matter that I have ever seen. Thank you for posting.
Gotta love that old Gibson craftmanship! Great score, man!

I have always though the oval hole three pointers were the most beautiful. Oval hole two pointers are to die for, three pointers are to kill for.
Thanks for the feedback. When I got the mandolin the peghead had been broken off several times, with multiple old repairs. I spliced on a new peghead years ago, but hadn't had a chance to do anything further until recently. The fingerboard is also replaced, but is an exact duplicate of the original. The fingerboard has an 8 inch radius (that I'm still not used to.) The fingerboard also tapers in thickness, being thinner at the nut end. Three out of the four pieces of pearl around the pickguard have been replaced, as well as all three points, and one piece around the sound holed. It sounds very bright, and quite loud, but without the throatiness of the later F models.
It probably hasn't been played in 50 years, until now. I am enjoying it!
A beautiful mandolin for sure. The parts that really caught my attention were the extreme contours of the arched top plate. That is certainly some amazing carving. Also the oval hole certainly seems large compared to the later 2 point F-2 models?
I expect that these features contribute to the relatively stronger treble side to the sound. I played one exactly like your restoration (albeit not nearly as nice) at a shop here in town few years ago and still regret that I did not buy it that day -- loved the sound -- it was very different than either of my other 2-point F2's.
The oval hole on the 3-point is 3 X 1 and 3/4 inches. On a later 2-point it is 2 and 1/2 X 1 and 9/6 inches.
