Hello there mandocrucians
I recently (two weeks ago...nearly) rec'd a 1920's Weymann mandolute from MWH in Richmond VA (a pleasure to deal w/) and the little blighter is buzzin. I know that humididty could be playing a part in the proceedings. I grew up in New England, and have had trouble w/ Vermont winters. A friend (luthier) dressed the frets from 12 up. Still buzzin. The frets are pretty high all round, and it buzzes on th open A and D strings. I've tuned it down a whole step to let it settle. I'm wondering if it might be the nut...should I dress the rest of the frets...and what about silk and steel strings, do they create less pounds per square inch??? I'd appreciate any help.

I had a similar problem with a Weymann and the nut was the culprit. They seem to have sort of a buzz-proneness. I have to say, I haven't particularly warmed to mine. I like the look but the tone, well. But I don't mean to dampen your enthusiasm. Have someone look at the nut and see if that helps. IF you haven't already looked at Frets.com, there's tons of great advise there for finding and curing buzzes.

thanks for the tip...I suspected the nut...just the A and D seem a bit low. I really like the tone...its not ideal for everything, but its a little beaut for jigs and reels...not to mention rags and blues.
