Hi Builders: I am currently refinishing my F5 #2. I don't like the color I stained it and I got the Lacquer way thick on it. I plan on taking it down , restain, and do a French Polish on it.
I got all the lacquer off it last night. and I am in ther process of sanding off the old stain.
Question: Do I have to get every bit of old stain off?
In the neck joint area, it seems impossible.
As long as I stain it darker than the old stain, will I be OK?
Or do I have to get every bit of old stain off?
I got most all the stain off the front and back, but other areas I can still see the old stain, just not sure how perfect I need to be, I am assuming, the new stain will cover over the old stain, but I don't want to assume. Thanks John

Test the areas with new stain..it all depends on colors used and whether the wood is sealed off now or open for stain

I think you'll be fine. A new stain will cover what's left of the old, especailly if it's darker than the old stain was, but I'm sometimes surprised what I can hide with even a light colored stain.
