I'm needing some help identifying a chord. The notes are C, G#, E, C or in tablature ...
8
7
6
5
I don't see any reference to this chord shape in any of my books.
Any help would be appreciated.

That would be a "C augmented". You can find it in the Mandolin Cafe chord finder.

Great chord. You can play a whole tone scale over it which is tons of fun and can be a nice touch in the right spot. Whole tone would be two frets between each note, ala:
<span style='font-family:Courier'>----------|-------0--
----------|-1-3-5----
---0-2-6--|----------
-5--------|----------</span>
<span style='font-family:Courier'>

Thanks for the responses. I hit the chord accidentally after trying to move from a fifth fret based C chord to a fifth fret based F chord. Played in between it sounds very cool. So now I've got a cool rhythm lick that goes C, C Augmented, F, G based on the fourth fret.
In tab 8 8 x x
7 7 8 5
5 6 7 5
5 5 5 4
Lather, shampoo and repeat .... anyone have a good chord to break the tension and end it ??
I'm stuck.
Thanks,
Pete
Seems like almost any C chord will do the trick, but since you're descending, I guess a first position C would be my choice.

You can also use a diminished chord as a connector. Try these two progressions. C-C#dim-D and C-C#dim-G.
