can the f-9 in the classifieds have a serial number of 30502070 ? Thats the number provided . I looked at the Gibson site and as I read it, the 1st and 5th numbers represent the year made> what am I missing here?

The first number represents the last number of the year it was made, then the 2nd and 3rd number represent the month, the forth and fifth numbers are the day, the sixth and seventh represent what number this particular mandolin is in production for that day, and the 8th or last number represents the decade year. So, your above serial number would be.. This F9 was made on May 02, 2003 and it was the 7th one made that day.

Jim, That looks right, but isn't that 70th one made?

ronlane3, nope, the 6th and seventh are the number in production for the day, the last number reflects the year decade... ie: 07 for the number of production and the 0 goes with the first number 3 to give a year of 03. So, it would break down like this for this particular serial number, 30502070:

3(year of the decade) 05(month) 02(day) 07(number in production count today) 0(year decade)

Hope that isn't to confusing, as it's sometimes hard to explain.
