I bought a Framus in great condition except it had a funky homemade wooden nut....and ancient strings, and old handmade? metal tuners. But...it sounded good/ok/normal. Put on real nut, put on new strings. NOW, the open string sound is good, rings out nicely...but fretted sound is damped....quiet, muffled....not 'wide open'. Is this the because the strings are all new and just need to be broken in ? Or do I have a problem? The action looks fine (to me). When I replace guitar strings they sound better......so I don't understand.

Will it might sound better, but not as something where it sounds good when not using the fingerboard and muffled otherwise. It sounds very much to me as though it's time for a visit with a repair person or luthier. This could be something that could be easily repaired.

After a day of research, I finally came to that decision, too. Thank you Greg.....I appreciate getting another opinion.
