I'm having problems with re stringing my mandolin. I can get all the strings on and tuned except for one of my E strings. I try to tune it but it keeps slipping and detunes. I tune it up as far a possible before it detunes. I leave it to settle for a day and then can tune it up a bit further. I can never get it up to E as the string seems to weaken due to so much tuning and breaks. I've broken numerous strings and am starting to lose patience. Is there anything I can do? I tightened the tuning nuts but made no difference.
Appreciate any help

howdy lelong,
Here's a recent thread (http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/showthread.php?60724-a-single-mandolin-string-repeatedly-going-sharp&highlight=slots) with a similar problem, here's another one (http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/showthread.php?60329-Tuning-Peg-Blues&highlight=slots). Besides nut slots and bridge slots, there's wrapping the string on the post. So, tell us a little more, like where the string is breaking, and is it going sharp or flat when "detuning." Also what kind of mandolin and strings. You mention restringing, was everything working properly before?
My best, benny

Thanks for your reply
I bought a this fairly basic cheap stagg (http://www.imuso.co.uk/Acoustic-Guitars/Other-Instruments/Mandolins/8554-/Stagg-M50E-Electro-Acoustic-Mandolin) mandolin about 4 years ago and thought recently I should really change the strings (don't play much). Got all the new strings on and tuned except the the second E string. I can't get it tuned up as it seems to keep slipping and detuning flat. I can never get it up to the desired E note as it keep slipping back down. Eventually it breaks mostly over the bridge. I'm using light gauge.
The strings which were on previously (the ones that came on it when bought) had always been fine and stayed in tune
What can I do? Do I need to do something with the bridge? Do you think I could have put the bridge on the wrong way around after I restrung?
Sorry I'm pretty clueless really. Think I may stick to my guitar

Where does the string break?
Are you using the "lock" system of attaching the string to the post? See reference above by John.
