just got back from a day at the boston folk festival. sam b, geoff muldar, natalie mcmaster, david bromberg and more.

my highlight was a small stage for an hour and 1/2 with david b, sam b, natalie m and one of david's backup guys trading songs -phenomenal. sam was great as always, and great to see david b touring again. a real talent- blues, folk, rock, etc.. he came out with his quartet and started with himself and 2 others on mando and 4th guy on bass- eeeeeeeeeexcellent.
never saw natalie m. before. what a high powered performance.
a super day.
hey neal- what did you think???

I never got to the alternate venues; kids in tow; lot's of stuff- chairs, blankets, coolers. Basically just camped out in the main field all day. Heard a lot of good stuff anyway. I think I liked everyone who came on. Was that Duke picking with Lucy Kaplanski? Nice mandola, killer telecaster! I think the first time I heard Bromberg do "Statesboro Blues" had to be about 30 years ago. He's still got it totally together. First time I saw, Sam Bush. What can I say, he rocks. Natalie McMaster's show was awesome. What a great musican and performer! I like that she doesn't play just pure traditional fiddle but mixes it up with some contemporary stuff and jams. She's real fun to watch play, those blue pants were a little over the top:-)

Cold, huh. The coffee place sure was doing well.

This was my first time at the BFF, my kid's three and I figure he could just about hack it. He made it from 11:00 to 6:30, left toward the end of the Nat McMaster set. Definitely a good time. Will go again. My wife was amazed at the talent there and how many good artists performed for the price of the ticket.

PS

Martin was there. I don't play guitar much at all but I browsed. They had this little guitar that looked like dark Koa wood. Turns out it's a synthetic body with screen-printed paper finish with a laminated ash neck and synthetic fingerboard. About 3/4 sized. Sounded okay and felt real nice for a cheap guitar. The martin said it sells for abotu $250. I thought it would be a great knock around / camping guitar. Sure wish someone made a mando like that for that price.
